Updated May 08, 2014.

Definition: Psychotherapeutic technique in which the patient is trained to function more effectively in his real-life roles by acting out situations in which he has experienced interpersonal conflict. Role playing allows the patient the freedom to learn and practice new skills without the fear of failure. It may also give the patient new insights into his relationships or provide him with empathy for the experiences of others.
