- Be doubly sure you satisfy that nesting urge by not only creating a space of your own for your sweet babe, but also by creating some of the items going into the space. Handcraft keepsake wall art and add subtle decorative touches instead of purchasing everything pre-made from the store. Adding handcrafted items to your newborn's nursery will make it feel more cozy and personal.
- Sometimes in a room all the little details together make the biggest impact, so don't neglect the little things in your nursery. Dress up the plain lampshade on your baby's nightstand with a quick and simple project that even the more inexperienced crafter can complete. Choose a fabric trim for the lamp. For a girl's nursery, you may want something more frilly, such as lace or ribbon. For a boy's nursery something a little less frilly but still playful and sweet, such as ball fringe in a light shade, might be a better choice. Use hot glue to attach the fabric fringe to the lamp. You can also dress up the lamp to go with the shade by hot gluing polka dots, or other shapes, cut from felt to the lamp to soften it up a bit.
- Use items from your infancy that are packed away in storage to create a piece of wall art for your child's nursery that is a true treasure. Fill a shadow box with items such as your first pair of baby booties, your first rattle, your tattered old stuffed animal and a picture of you as a newborn. Arrange these items in the shadow box in a visually pleasing way before hanging it up on the wall. Create one shadow box of yourself and one of your spouse. Arrange another shadow box with your infant's keepsakes as he grows.
- Turn extra furniture you have around the house, or that relatives are itching to get rid of, to furnish your child's room. The hodgepodge of furniture from the baby's loved ones will only serve as another reminder of how loved they are. Sand the furniture down to remove any paint or varnish. Paint the old furniture a new color that coordinates with the nursery decor. Take upholstered items in to be reupholstered in fabrics that coordinate and are child-friendly, such as stain resistant fabric. Use wallpaper to dress up the fronts of dresser drawers. Use decoupage medium to add embellishments to the items such as dried flowers or shapes cut from paper or fabric.
