The Hana Highway in Maui is one of natures masterpieces to be one with.
This Highway is on the rural east side of the island.
It gives the feeling of Hawaii's early days of wild beauty and sleepy surf towns.
This famous road is also known by the name of the Road to Hana.
It starts in the town of Paia, which is about a 40 minute drive from Maui's more developed southwest area, and curves around east along the coast for more than 60 miles.
This road trip can be done in about 3 hours, but it is much better to allot at least a day for this trip.
This way while riding on a motorcycle a person has the time to soak in all of the rainforest setting and allow for traffic.
A good idea is to start before dawn to take in the sunrise.
This route incorporates more than 600 hairpin curves and dozens of one lane bridges.
The driving can be a bit taxing, but the sites are breathtaking! Be sure to leave some time to see some or all of the following: Keanae Arboretum, with an exotic botanical garden; Waikani Falls, a trio of crashing chutes; and Ka'eleku Caverns, an ancient site created from lava flow.
You can turn around at the village of Hana or, you can continue on to Haleakala National Park, and camp in the beauty that is seen nowhere else on earth.
