- 1). Pull in the clutch lever. Using the bottom of your left foot, press the shift lever down repeatedly to shift into first gear. Gently tap the shift lever upward to shift into neutral. Start the dirt bike's motor.
- 2). Find the clutch's engagement point, the point where the clutch begins to catch and start turning the rear wheel. Release the clutch lever slowly until the dirt bike begins to roll forward. This is the clutch's engagement point. Pull the clutch lever back in to disengage the clutch. Repeat until you are familiar with the clutch's engagement point and the feeling of the dirt bike pulling forward.
- 3). Release the clutch lever slowly to engage the clutch. Roll the twist grip back slightly with your right hand to open the throttle as the dirt bike begins to roll forward. Release the clutch lever completely and open the throttle wider with the twist grip to accelerate away from a complete stop.
- 4). Pull the clutch lever in with your left hand and gently roll the twist grip forward with your right hand to close the throttle. Place your left foot under the shift lever and press it up until it will not move, to shift into second gear. Release the clutch lever smoothly and roll the twist grip back to accelerate forward. Repeat to shift into higher gears until you are in "top" gear, the final gear available.
- 5). Pull the clutch lever in and roll the throttle grip forward to close the throttle. Place your left foot on top of the shift lever and press the lever down to shift into a lower gear. Snap the twist grip back with a quick motion as you release the clutch lever to "blip" the throttle, increasing the the engine's RPM to compensate for the change in gears. Repeat as necessary to shift into lower gears until you are in "bottom" or first gear.
- 6). Shift into first gear and hold the clutch lever in to disengage the clutch completely. Roll the twist grip forward to close the throttle completely. Apply the front brake using the brake lever on the right handlebar to slow the dirt bike to a complete stop. Put your right foot on the ground and gently tap the shift lever upward with your left foot to shift into neutral. Stop the dirt bike's engine using the kill switch on the right handlebar.
