- 1). Acquire a thick, blank journal. Numerous retailers sell a blank Book of Shadows. Other versions do come with inscriptions already in the book. These may include the basics such as rudimentary spells, pagan holidays, element description, altar tools and other technicalities. Either way, the teen will find blank pages to fill. One of the benefits of buying a Book of Shadows is it will have a pagan design on the front. Leather bound ones often have pentagrams embossed in the leather with gems embedded.
- 2). Create a title page with your name and date for the first page. The title page inscription could be something simple like "Sara's Book of Shadows" or a variation like "While on the Pagan Path..."
- 3). Write a dedication or blessing on the second page of the Book of Shadows. Common in any type of book, it becomes particularly symbolic in paganism; it's protecting your book with magic.
- 4). Designate the next page for the table of contents. This will be compiled as you fill in the pages. Plan a layout for table of contents on a separate sheet of paper. Build your book in sections so information is easy to locate.
- 5). Add your basic beliefs and laws in the first section of the book. These beliefs and mission statements will guide the practice that is shared throughout the rest of the book. Include the primary pagan practices like the power of three, karma, holidays, charts of the elements and an astrological wheel.
- 6). Create another section for spells and incantations. Use drawing pencils to illustrate rituals and dances. Leave blank pages for more spells. Create a similar section to write about dreams and a section for experiences. This should document your experiences with the spells.
- 7). Make additions to your Book of Shadows each time you try something new or discover new information.
