How to Run a Desktop Computer in a Car Power Inverter

    • 1). Purchase a DC-to-AC power inverter. This type of inverter will convert the power source that comes from a DC lighter output to a typical three-prong wall outlet type. Power inverters can be found at large department stores, electronics stores, and truck stops. They typically cost around $20.

    • 2). Turn the vehicle on.

    • 3). Plug the inverter into the DC power outlet in the vehicle. This outlet will typically be found in the ashtray, but additional outlets may be located throughout the vehicle.

    • 4). Plug the computer into the power inverter and turn it on. If it does not power up, then the car battery is not capable of supporting the power soak from the computer. For best results, the vehicle should always be on and running, as the computer will require a large amount of current to run.
