- 1). Drape pieces of soft fabric over the rafters so they cascade gently down from the ceiling. Lace or a light canvas complements the look of rafters and ties in with the rustic style of exposed rafters. Use a staple gun to secure the fabric.
- 2). Tie strips of fabric to the center rafters in the room, then pull the opposite ends of the strips up and tie them to rafter edges in various corners and borders in the room. This creates a draping effect that causes the eye to drift to the center of the rafters and follow the arc of the fabric to the room's edges.
- 3). Hang paper lanterns from the rafters using fishing line so it appears as though the lanterns are hovering without suspension beneath the rafters.
- 4). Hang old-fashioned oil lamps or antique lanterns from the rafters to cast a soft glow on the rafters. These can be hung with a high-weight fishing line, rope or even chains, depending on the weight of the items.
- 5). Wind white Christmas lights around the rafters to cause them to sparkle. This also draws the eyes of the weddings guests up to the rafters, helping them to notice the room's architectural beauty. Instead of winding the Christmas lights around the rafters, allow all the strands of lights to drape down in an arc from the rafters, creating a dramatic visual that calls attention to the rafters.
- 6). Hang small bouquets of wildflowers or daisies, for a natural look, or roses, for a classic look, from the rafters using fishing line. Bouquets can be hung upside down by the stems for a whimsical look or the line can be tied underneath the head of the flowers and hung right-side up, depending on your style preference.
