- 1). The pieces for the swag curtain are two panels, topper and two tie backs. Lay out your material and cut pieces. Start with the panels and cut 73 inches long all the way across the 72-inch piece of material. Cut off 2 inches from the side all the way down the 73-inch piece. Now you have a piece that is 70 inches by 73 inches. Cut it in half. Now each piece is 35 inches by 73 inches. These are your panels and you just need to sew in the sides, top and bottom. On the top and bottom fold over a quarter inch and fold again, using a half inch of material. You can pin or iron the fold and sew using a lock stitch all the way across. Turning the material in twice to keep it from fraying and having messy strings coming off of it.Do the same for the sides. Now your panels should measure 34 inches wide by 72 inches long. Don't panic if they are not exact to the measurements, it is not crucial. Your panels are done for now.
- 2). Next cut your topper. Cut 14 1/2 inches down the remaining part of the material all the way across the 72 inches. Now cut one inch off the 72-inch end. Sew the bottom and sides just like you did for the panels. Turn the top over 1 inch and iron all the way across.
- 3). Lay your panels out and place the topper on top of the panels. Both pieces with your finished side toward you. Put the top of the topper 1 1/2 inches down from the top of the panels. The outside of the panel should meet the outside of the topper and you should have a gap in the middle where the panels don't meet. Pin the topper in making sure you keep it 1 1/2 inches from the top of the panels all the way across. Sew the topper in about at about 1/4 inch and again at 3/4 of an inch all the way across. Now your topper is attached to the panels.
- 4). For your tie backs you will need to cut two pieces 24 inches across and 7 inches down. Fold in half long ways with the finished side in. Sew a 1/2-inch seam all the way down and turn right side out. Fold in 1 1/2 inches on each end and iron the folds. Directly in the center and a quarter inch from the fold sew in a 3/4 inch button whole. Cut the center of the button hole using a razor blade or seam stripper. Do this on all 4 ends of your tie backs. Your tie backs are done.
- 5). On the top of the panels you should have a one and a quarter inch piece over the topper. Start at one side and go in 1 inch and a 1/4 inch from the top, or right below your seam and put in a 3/4-inch button hole. Then put in button holes every 6 1/2 inches until you come to the gap. Repeat on the other panel. Cut the center of your button holes and you are done.
