    • Some STD infections are bacterial, and many of these are cured by antibiotics. However, viruses like human papillomavirus, HIV and herpes are persistent infections that have no cure.

    Misconceptions

    • Because of recent advancements in treatments for diseases such as HIV, some people believe infection is curable or harmless. Viruses such as HIV are deadly, and require medical treatment for the lifetime of the patient.

    Prevention

    • Prevent STD infection by practicing safe sex. Oral contraceptives do not protect against infections. Use condoms to prevent blood-borne viruses spread during sexual contact.

    Types

    • STDs are bacterial or viral. Bacterial STDs include chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis. Viral STDs include herpes, HIV, human papillomavirus and hepatitis.
