Pregnancy & Blood Clots

    Types

    • Pregnant women typically experience blood clots in the legs or pelvic area. Occasionally, these blood clots break off and travel to the lungs, causing a life-threatening medical condition.

    Symptoms

    • Symptoms of blood clots in the legs include the skin being pale and cool to the touch. Part of the leg may also be tender and swollen. You may notice red streaks over the veins, and walking will likely be painful.

    Risk Factors

    • Although all pregnant women are at an increased risk for developing blood clots, there are certain factors that increase the risk. These factors include obesity, long periods of bed rest or inactivity and a genetic predisposition of blood clotting.

    Treatment

    • If blood clots form during pregnancy, the woman is typically given an anticoagulant medication. This medicine works to thin the blood and prevent the blood from clotting.

    Prevention

    • Although blood clots may not always be preventable, there are certain things you can do to decrease your risk during pregnancy. Most importantly, remain as active as your doctor allows. Be conscious of the signs and symptoms of blood clots and speak with your physician immediately if you believe you have one. Also, make sure your doctor is aware if you have a family history of blood clotting.
