How to Select a Laptop

    • 1). Decide if your needs are better met by a Mac or PC laptop. Apple products tend to be more expensive, but for those with an interest in graphic design and artwork, they offer more functionality. PC products are better suited for most video games and some business applications.

    • 2). Visit a store and test out the laptops they have available. See if the keyboard is comfortable and functional, and find out what programs, functions and RAM (random access memory) are included. Ask about the functionality, costs and efficiency of the laptop.

    • 3). Look at the laptop from a practical standpoint; if you don't use a track pad, you may end up purchasing an optical mouse for your laptop as well. Find a computer that has multiple USB ports, a wireless network card and a DVD burner to facilitate easy back-up of your files and documents.

    • 4). Research the specific qualities of the laptops you are considering. Read reviews of them. Know various pros and cons to each laptop you look at before you purchase it; find out if there are specific pieces of software that you will need to buy, if the laptop runs hot after a period of use and how susceptible it is to viruses.

    • 5). Purchase a laptop online. This will allow you to select specific modifications such as the screen size and case color, and pick out various types of hardware and software that can be pre-installed; additionally, online purchases often have rebates which will save you hundreds of dollars on your purchase.
