- 1). Talk with your tween before making any decisions. You should allow your tween to offer her ideas about how she wants her room to look. Give her the freedom to make choices. It's common for tweens to choose colors that are bright and may appear shocking in other parts of the house. While you may need to veto ideas for cost reasons, try not to dismiss an idea just because of stylistic differences.
- 2). Choose a main color and accent color for the room. The main color will be the focal point of the room. You'll use accent colors for baseboards and window frames. If you need to save money, try to choose a color that matches the current bedding. Otherwise, you may need to replace that as well. Paint cards can help you find colors that look good together.
- 3). Purchase enough paint to paint the whole room. An online paint calculator can help you determine how much you'll need or you can ask at the paint store. If you want a unique color, most paint stores or DIY super centers can mix a blend to match any color.
- 4). Test a small area before painting the whole room. Some paints look different when they dry. To avoid a costly mistake, test a small area of the room to see what the paint looks like when it's dry.
- 5). Prepare the room for painting. Move things into the middle of the room or out of the room. Use drop cloths to protect the floor or carpet and cover furniture. Around areas that you don't want to paint, use tape.
- 6). Paint the room. Use a roller to get a more even look. Ask your tween to help with this process.
- 7). Add interest with decals. Stick-on decals, or removable stickers, are a great way to add designs for a small amount of money. Choose styles that fit with your tween's tastes.
