- 1). Learn the social culture of your foreign workers. Determine how foreign workers best receive praise or criticism, since people in many other cultures do not like to be singled out.
- 2). Train your foreign employees early and often. Familiarize your employees with company policy in the interview and during orientation so that they will understand your expectations. Respect cultural differences of foreign workers, but do not change policy completely to meet the needs of foreign workers.
- 3). Train other employees as well, and hold them to the same expectations as foreign employees. Teach understanding in your trainings and ask employees to look at the problem or situation from the other worker's point of view. Teach employees about culture shock, how difficult it can be to go through and how mutual respect and communication can help foreign workers overcome that shock.
- 4). Assign mentors to help your foreign employees adjust. Ask mentors to not only help your employee but their spouses as well. Tell your mentors to stay with your employees through the training process, as well as continue to offer help after training is completed.
- 5). Help your foreign employees feel comfortable by offering to help and asking about their needs before they come to you. Try to be aware and sensitive of any issues your employees may have.
- 6). Keep language simple and clear because some foreign workers are still learning English. Avoid slang and jargon since foreign workers may not understand what you are talking about, which will create confusion and frustration.
