- Researchers at the University of Milan in Italy conducted a study with 680 people and found that participants who ate more carrots, tomatoes, fresh fruit and green vegetables were less likely to suffer from psoriasis symptoms. They found that eating three or more servings of carrots can reduce psoriasis symptoms by 40 percent. Eating seven or more servings of tomatoes can reduce symptoms by 60 percent, and two daily servings of fresh fruit may reduce symptoms by 50 percent.
Include at least one serving of fruit and vegetables with every meal or snack Top your morning oatmeal with a cup of blueberries or add a cup of steamed vegetables to your lunch. A quick way to get a serving of vegetables is to purchase frozen pre-cut vegetables without sauce. Pop a cup in the microwave, and they are ready to eat in minutes. - A British study concluded that people who ate 6 oz. of salmon and mackerel for six weeks had a 15 percent improvement of psoriasis symptoms. The omega-3 fatty acids in most cold-water fish reduces inflammation caused by the body's production of prostaglandins and leukotrienes. Salmon is particularly high in omega-3 fatty acids and can provide relief when partnered with your usual psoriasis medications.
Include fish as your main course once or twice a week to get your omega-3s. Grill or broil salmon with plenty of lemon and dill for dinner, or top a bowl of linguine with pieces of smoked salmon. - Beet juice can help relieve the pain and itch from psoriasis. According to Cherie Calbom, MS, certified nutritionist and coauthor of "Juicing for Life," many people living with psoriasis have congestion in their bowels and liver. She explains that a high-fiber diet will detoxify the liver, and that beet juice is the perfect detoxifier. Calbom recommends drinking one glass of beet juice a day combined with carrot juice and lemon for added flavor.
