What Can You Do Besides Wash Your Hands?

Curcumin seems to prevent diabetes among people with pre-diabetes – abnormally high blood sugar levels. In a study published in the journal Diabetes Care, 235 pre-diabetic adults took a placebo or 1500 milligrams of curcuminoids daily. After 9 months, 19 of the 116 placebo patients developed type 2 diabetes. However, none of the 119 curcumin patients did. Presently this is attributed to the anti-inflammatory effects of curcumin protecting the beta cells from damage. Beta cells in the pancreas release blood sugar-regulating insulin. As for curcumin, it's a compound found in curry - whose protective abilities are expected to "curry" favor.

One and a half drinks daily may help prevent bone loss. In a study published in the journal Menopause, researchers took blood samples from 40 women in their 50's and 60's, who had consumed alcohol regularly. Blood samples were taken again after the women hadn't consumed alcohol for 2 weeks. During the non-drinking period more bone was dissolved. That's because alcohol slows done the bone turnover rate – which over time may protect against bone fractures. However, these results don't apply to men or to people under age 25 who are still building bone mass – "make no bones about it".

Exercise may lower breast cancer risk. A study published in the journal Cancer included more than 3,000 women ages 20-98. Women who had 10-19 hours of at least mild exercise weekly from their reproductive years on had a 30% lower risk of breast cancer. Although there wasn't a reduced risk before women's first birth, the effects of exercise were strongest among postmenopausal women. Losing fat reduces the amount of 2 hormones associated with breast cancer. In fact, physically active women who gain more than 11 pounds after menopause have a higher breast cancer risk. The odds are "weighted" against them.

Bringing your dog to work reduces stress. A study published in the International Journal of Workplace Health Management followed 76 employees at a business with a 14-year history of allowing dogs. Some employees brought their dogs to work, some didn't and some didn't own dogs. Although everyone started the day with low baseline levels of the stress hormone cortisol, those who didn't bring their dogs had drastically higher levels at the end of the day. Dogs in the workplace also improved morale and collaboration among all workers. It seems Google being a "dog company" gives new meaning to "going to the dogs".
