- 1). Mail invitations that proclaim your party as a "Fabulously 40 Birthday Party," making them elegant, not mournful that fill everyone in on what you have planned. Invite all the friends and family that are currently involved in the birthday girl's life. Locate and invite older friends that might love to come, especially those from out of town.
- 2). Explain in the invitation that you are celebrating, not mourning her turning 40 --- so no gag gifts, black armbands or over-the-hill jokes. Suggest in lieu of gag gifts that they might bring a nice bottle of wine, gift certificates to local restaurants or a day at a spa or golf club. Mention that the party attire is cocktail or black-tie optional.
- 3). Decorate with elegance; blow up silver, white and either pink or blue balloons depending on the gender of the person turning 40. Sprinkle coordinating confetti on tabletops.
- 4). Set your tables with neutral-colored tablecloths and coordinating linen napkins. Add candlesticks and a fresh floral arrangement to the center of each table.
- 5). Play music that appeals to the guest of honor. Ask if they prefer modern music or would like tunes that date to other times of their life. If dancing, make sure that an area is available, renting a room with floor space if necessary.
- 6). Serve champagne. Nothing says celebration like flutes of champagne. Be sure to borrow or rent enough crystal flutes if you do not own them.
- 7). Serve heavy hors d'oeuvres or a simple elegant dinner. Hire a caterer if your budget allows. This will free you up to enjoy your guests and party.
- 8). Allow the caterer to clean up the mess. This simple step will make the party perfect for you as well as your guests.
