If you are anything like me when I first started playing guitar, you probably have no knowledge of music theory, including where the notes are on the guitar.
This simple modification, which I use with my own students, will show you where the notes are on the guitar, at least between E2 (the low E string) and A5 (5th fret on the high E).
Materials Needed: 1.
Paper 2.
Scissors 3.
Tape 4.
Something to write/type with.
5.
A guitar.
Once you have all of these common materials ready, it's time to get started.
The first step is to write or type the letters of the alphabet.
I suggest creating one letter first, and make sure it is the right size for your guitar.
Otherwise, redo it and try again.
Once you have found the perfect size, start creating the rest of the letters of the music alphabet.
The exact letters, and the amount you need, can be determined by the picture to the right.
Trim off any excess paper.
Next, you'll put the letters on the guitar.
There should be enough room for you to put the letters on without taking the strings off, but if you must, do so.
Tape the letters in the locations showed above.
So, why would you want to do this? This will help with reading music, as well as creating chords, especially when you get to more complex chords, such as Bm7add4.
Some will say, "Can't I just read guitar tabs and not worry about music theory?" My answer to that is yes, you could.
However, knowing the neck of your guitar, as well as knowing music theory in general, is essential to being a good player and composer.
