- Though many cultures opt out of direct sunbathing due to the negative health effects associated with sunbathing, the Greek culture still partakes in sunbathing. Proper etiquette while visiting a Greek beach is to avoid making comments toward someone in reference to sun exposure. Greece is an educated country with access to news and media reports on the dangers of sunbathing; however, Greek people enjoy time at the beach and getting tan. You should also be aware that sunbathing for women often involves no top and sometimes swimsuit bottoms are taken off as well.
- Greek culture still follows many of the traditional rules associated with work and play. Because of this, and especially during the hottest of summer months, many Greeks nap during the afternoon. Some nap for upwards of four hours during the middle of the day, and there are times where those naps happen on the beach. If you are on a Greek beach and people are napping nearby, respect their right to catch a few hours of sleep while enjoying the sounds and smells of the ocean, which is relaxing to just about anyone regardless of ethnicity.
- Know that smoking is not prohibited on Greek beaches as it is at some U.S. beaches. The culture of Greece still partakes in smoking quite a bit, which means that, while at a Greek beach, you will most likely be close by to someone who smokes. Refrain from making comments or loud remarks against smoking. Respect the rights of those around you, especially while visiting their country where the practice and habit is considered to be, at times, acceptable.
- Alcohol is another vice to many; however, it is part of the Greek lifestyle. As with everything else, not everyone participates in such behaviors all the time; however, you may encounter alcohol usage while on a Greek beach. Again, refrain from staring, commenting loudly or acting distraught over such instances. Know the culture and respect the wishes and practices of those around you. You will also find that Greek people talk very expressively, using their hands as they speak. Avoid making comments about this practice and enjoy the lively demeanor Greek people have while communicating.
- The Greek culture is a very social culture. While at a Greek beach, you may find picnic tables set up where large gatherings occur involving friends and family. Be aware that Greek people enjoy the company of one another and tend to celebrate all gatherings with lots of talking, loud music and dancing around. Therefore, if you happen to encounter such a group, do not be surprised to hear some music and people sporadically getting up to dance with one another. Since Greeks are social, do not be alarmed if you are invited to join in the festivities.
