  Going through a divorce can be a very difficult time in a person's life. Often, women don't want any connection with their former married life,and that includes their ex-husband's last name. Changing your name after a divorce can be a cleansing process of sorts, but it also involves a rather lengthy checklist to ensure you don't miss anything.
  
  

Government

• First on the list of divorce-name-change bases to touch is the Social Security office. You can get information on how to change your name with Social Security at http://www.ssa.gov. You will also have to have your name changed on your passport and let the post office know as well.
  
  

Car and License

• There are a couple of places relating to your automobile that will require your new name. You will have to change your driver's license first. A trip to your local Department of Motor Vehicles will take care of that. You should also change any titles and registration that are in your married name.
  
  

Insurance

• You will have to report your name change to your insurance agency or agencies for all of your policies. These can include auto, life and health insurance.
  
  

Banks

• Any bank accounts you shared with your spouse or had in your married name will have to be changed. If you have a safe-deposit box, that will have to be changed, too.
  
  

Creditors

• Any credit cards, department store cards and loan listings that are in your former name will have to be changed. Creditors will need your current name in order to get in touch with you.
  
  

Utilities

• Any utility accounts that are currently in your married name will have to be changed. This includes gas, electricity, water, telephone, cable or satellite TV, and Internet service.
  
  

Employer

• Your workplace HR people need to know the proper name to print on your paychecks. Notifying them will also cover any employee benefits you receive, as well as any retirement or pension plans.
  
  

Memberships

• Any memberships or subscriptions will have to reflect your name change. These can include newspapers, magazines, health clubs and the like.
  
  

Online

• Since the Internet has become such a part of daily life, it is important to note your name change at any online venues where it may be necessary. Your email address plus your listing on any online forums, clubs or groups should be changed.
