New Year’S Eve in Downtown Atlanta

New Year's Eve activities are plentiful in downtown Atlanta. There are fun events leading up to the Peach Bowl, ice skating in Centennial Olympic Park, and carriage rides through Piedmont Park. Then celebrate the start of 2013 at the Peach Drop at Underground Atlanta.

LSU and Clemson will match up in the 45th annual Peach Bowl at the Georgia Dome. These are two of the best teams in the country, and each school has a 10-2 regular season record. Kick off time is 7:30pm, and the game is expected to be a sellout. Those who are not lucky enough to have game tickets can still enjoy some of the pre-game festivities. The Peach Bowl Parade is scheduled for December 31 at 12:30pm in downtown Atlanta. The parade will feature the Clemson and LSU bands and cheerleaders, floats, dance groups, and classic cars. The route starts at Peachtree and Baker Streets and finishes at the Georgia World Congress Center. Football fans can then attend Fan Fest from 2-6pm at the Georgia World Congress Center. Fans can participate in contests, try the obstacle courses and climbing walls, and watch the team pep rallies. Fan Fest tickets may be purchased at the door for $15.

An alternative to football activities is ice skating in Centennial Olympic Park. The outdoor rink is open on New Year's Eve from 10am-5pm. Tickets are $10 per person and include skate rental. At dusk the 21-acre park is transformed into a winter wonderland for the holidays. Stroll through the park and enjoy the free Holiday in Lights show.

A Season of Magic will be going on at Piedmont Park in midtown Atlanta. Enjoy the beautiful holiday lights in a horse-drawn carriage ride through the park. There is also a carousel ride. The carriage rides originate from Park Tavern, located at 500 10th Street NE. Ice skating is also available at a covered rink adjacent to Park Tavern. Skating sessions run daily from 10:30am-midnight. Tickets are $15 and include skate rental.

The Peach Drop at Underground Atlanta is the South's largest New Year's Eve celebration. During the day there are family friendly activities including carnival rides, face painting, balloon artists, and live entertainment. There will be music all day in Kenny's Alley. The evening entertainment begins at 6pm. The headliner at 11:15pm will be Abbey Road LIVE!, a Beatles tribute group. The Peach drops at midnight, followed by a fireworks display to celebrate the New Year. The Peach Drop attracts about 100,000 people, and all activities are free. Visitors taking MARTA transportation should exit at the Five Points Station. MARTA trains will run until 2am.
