Language Interpretation Certification

    Prior Education and Training

    • Many interpreters gain a bachelor's degree before seeking certification. The majority of interpreters choose to major in one of three areas: linguistics, interpretation/translation, or their language of choice. This allows the interpreter to gain important skills and experience in communication, organization and their language. All interpreters must speak at least two languages extremely well. Merely being able to speak a second language doesn't allow one to easily become an interpreter. You must be able to think easily and freely in each language, and that takes years of exposure. Gain exposure through travel, language themed groups, or via language immersion software.

    Considerations

    • You must possess stellar skills in both communication and in your foreign language to be certified. Gaining certification is only a starting point, as you must continue to develop your skills throughout the course of your career.

    Employment

    • Employment as a certified interpreter is often freelance. You will more than likely have to seek your own jobs. There are periods where freelancers make a great deal of money in a short period of time, and then there are times when work is very scarce. Language interpretation certification will enable you to find better work and charge higher rates.

    Benefits and Function

    • Certification provides easily verifiable proof of your knowledge and skills. It makes you marketable and allows you to search for higher-paying clients and work.

    How To

    • Gaining certification begins with taking a class in translation/interpretation. These classes are language specific. Search for a program that meets your financial and scheduling needs. Bellevue College offers a continuing education program in interpretation. Its course of study is not language specific, but you are required to have solid skills in at least one other language. The U.S. Department of State also offers certification in a variety of interpretation fields.
