When it came time to get married and combine households it was surprising to see how much stuff we had collected as two individuals.
Then there were the bills and the cars we had to decide on too.
When we moved into our new home, we had decided to use my auto insurance company and were amazed at the increase in rates when we thought for sure they would go down because of the two vehicles and the house.
As we looked on the internet for auto insurance quotes and comparisons we did the preliminary questions on both sides.
First we did mine and then with the same company we would use his information to see what the rates would be for us.
No matter what company we checked out, we did a minimum of three companies and they all came back higher for me.
We finally decided to call one of the companies to see where we were going wrong or was there something we were missing? It turned out the reason his rates would come back lower with him as the primary auto insurance holder was due to his age and driving record.
He was over twenty-five, married, two vehicles, and a very good driving record.
I on the other hand had good auto insurance when I was single but as the primary the premiums were higher because I was twenty-four with a speeding ticket.
Even though I got the discount for having a home and being married the discounts washed each other out because of the speeding ticket and my age.
So, for the first year until I turned twenty-five and my speeding ticket fell off my driving record I was paying an extra sixty dollar on the premium.
I guess it was fair in the end it was not his fault and certainly was not his speeding ticket.
Lessons learned when you are researching internet auto insurance quotes.
Always try it both ways when there are two partners involved.
You may find that listing one first over the other will give you a better benefit or lower premium like we found out in our case.
Another reason it is always good to compare.
