How to Make a Bootable XP Flash Drive

    Slipstream Windows XP Updates

    • 1). Boot the computer into your current operating system.

    • 2). Insert the Windows XP installation disc. Click cancel if it prompts to begin Windows installation.

    • 3). Right click on the Windows XP disc in "My Computer" and select "Explore."

    • 4). Create the following folder on your computer:
      C:\winxp

    • 5). Select all the files and folders from the Windows XP installation disc Explorer window and copy them to the folder you just created.

    • 6). Download and install the free slipstreaming software nLite (see Resources).

    • 7). Launch nLite.

    • 8). Click "Next" to begin configuration.

    • 9). Click "Browse" and select C:\winxp as the location for your Windows installation and then click "Next."

    • 10

Select "Integrate a Service Pack" to include the latest Windows operating system updates in your installation.

    • 11

Configure any other Windows XP customizations using nLite (including disabling Windows components you might not need, integrating drivers and adding patches) and then click "Next."

    • 12

Click "Next" to build the updated Windows XP installation and answer "Yes" when it confirms that you want to commit the changes. The program will then build a Windows XP installation that includes the latest updates. This may take a few minutes.

    • 13

Input an ISO label and any variables you require (this is not required) and click "Make ISO" to save the installation to your computer. Save the ISO file as C:\winxp\xpsp3.iso and continue. The building process will take a few minutes. Once it is complete, you can continue to the next stage.

    Format USB Flash Drive

    • 1). Insert your USB flash drive.

    • 2). Right click on the USB flash drive from "My Computer" and select "Format."

    • 3). Select FAT32 as the format type and click "Start" to format the USB flash drive.

Install Windows XP on USB Flash Drive

    • 1). Download and install PEBuilder (see Resources).

    • 2). Navigate to the PEBuilder folder where the application was installed (usually it is C:\pebuilder).

    • 3). Navigate into the "plugin\peinst" folder.

    • 4). Double click "peinst.cmd" to launch the USB flash drive installer. This will launch a Command Prompt window.

    • 5). Type 1 and press enter to specify the Windows XP installation source. Enter C:\winxp\xpsp3.iso as the source file.

    • 6). Type 2 and specify the drive letter of your USB flash drive. You can determine the drive letter by launch My Computer and noting the drive letter specified (for instance, if it says D:\, specify the destination in the Command Prompt as D:\).

    • 7). Press 5 to install Windows XP to your USB flash drive. This process will take some time. The Command Prompt will alert you when the process is complete.
