- 1). Find a large workspace to work in. The workspace must be large enough to accommodate the car, all the tools you will be using, and extra space for storing all of the parts you are going to strip from the vehicle.
- 2). Acquire the 1974 Ford Ranchero owner's manual. These are available online or from the manufacturer. The manual will illustrate all of the cars parts and how to take it apart.
- 3). Strip the interior and exterior of the car. For the interior, take out the seats, steering wheel, carpet and dashboard. You might want to re-upholster the seats if they are damaged. Check the interior for any rust or missing or damaged parts. You can buy replacement parts online or from a garage.
Do the same with the exterior. Strip the car down to the frame and check each part of the exterior for missing or damaged pieces. Sand the rust using a fine grit sandpaper and purchase all missing parts online. - 4). Remove the engine from the Ranchero frame using an engine hoist. Check the engine for any broken or missing pieces and purchase these online.
- 5). Clean the engine. Use a toothbrush to remove all the large debris. Now cover the air intake, carburetor and all electrical parts with plastic bags and seal them with rubber bands so that no water can get through. Wash the engine with soapy water, then rinse it with a garden hose.
- 6). Paint the exterior of the Rancehero its original color. You might want to have this done professionally if you have no prior experience painting cars. If you do decide to paint it yourself, you can buy the paint either online, from the manufacturer, or at a local garage.
- 7). Reassemble the Ranchero. Place the engine into the frame using the engine hoist. Replace all the interior parts of the car and re-carpet it. Finish by rebuilding the exterior. You will need to consult the owner's manual for the entire rebuilding process. A general rule of thumb is that cars are easier to take apart than put back together, so make sure you follow the guidelines precisely.
