- 1). Download the Java RPM package from the Java website (see Resources).
- 2). Open a terminal window.
- 3). Type the command "su" to become the root user. Type the root password, when prompted.
- 4). Type the command "cd /usr/java" to change to the "/usr/java." This is where the Java software will be installed. You can install the Java software into another directory. Replace "/usr/java" with the name of the directory where you want to install the software.
- 5). Type the command "mv ~/Downloads/jre-6u<version>-linux-i586-rpm.bin ." to move the downloaded the Java installer to the "/usr/java" directory. Replace "<version>" with the correct version number for the software package. The "." at the end of the command says to move the installation software to the current directory.
- 6). Type the command "chmod a+x jre-6u<version>-linux-i586-rpm.bin" to make the installation software executable.
- 7). Type the command "./jre-6u<version>-linux-i586-rpm.bin" to start the installation.
- 8). Accept the license agreement, when prompted.
- 9). Type the command "ls" to verify that a subdirectory called "jre1.6.0_<version>" is installed in the current directory.
- 1). Type the command "cd /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins" to change to the Firefox installation directory. Change "/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins" to the correct installation directory for your setup.
- 2). Type the command "ln -s /usr/java/jre1.6.0_<version>/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so" to create a symbolic link to the "libjavaplugin_oji.so" plugin located in the Java installation directory.
- 3). Start or restart Firefox.
