- 1). Determine the educational goal for your game, such as teaching fractions, reviewing literature or remembering elements from the periodic table. Make a list of specific goals your students should learn, and the order your students should reach these goals. For instance, you may decide your students should learn how to add and subtract fractions, before incorporating fraction multiplication and division into your game.
- 2). Select a method for your game -- such as flash cards, puzzles or athletics. Review your list of goals, and think of ways you can use your method to reach them. You can adjust your game as needed to focus on these goals, even if it's based on an established game. For example, you may decide to have two students shoot four free throws each, then ask your class to turn their shot percentages into a fraction and add them together.
- 3). Design a scoring method for your game -- determining the rules for scoring, selecting the winner and awarding prizes. Include fun prizes like candy, the right to choose a movie for the class to watch, or bonus points on an upcoming quiz. Write a clear set of rules for your game, and make sure the scoring is clear. For instance, you may decide that the first student who answers the fraction addition correctly gets to shoot a free throw herself, earning an extra point on her next quiz if she makes the shot.
- 4). Explain the game to your class and have them play it, changing the rules as needed to make it fair and enjoyable. Remember your goal is to teach, and if the rules of your game are discouraging or too confusing, students may reject the project entirely. As an example, if you notice that the students are missing too many free throws after answering the question correctly, move the line up a few feet -- giving students a better chance to score.
