- According to a July 2008 USPS notice, books must be at least eight pages long to qualify for shipment by media mail. An exception to the no-advertising rule applies to books, which may contain an incidental announcement of upcoming or related books by the publisher. You can also send a manuscript, an early draft of a book, or a screenplay by this method. Printed music, such as sheet music and songbooks, also qualify for media mail shipping.
- USPS regulations allow you to ship many types of video recordings by media mail. VHS tapes and DVDs are both acceptable media mail materials. You may ship filmstrips using this method when they are sixteen millimeters or narrower. The USPS rate chart shows that it is cheaper to ship DVDs or filmstrips by first-class mail if they weigh less than 9 ounces.
- Just like video recordings, audio and sound recordings are eligible for media mail shipment. The USPS allows shipment of vinyl record albums, cassette tapes, 8-track tapes and compact discs by media mail. However, iPods or other MP3 players cannot be shipped via media mail, even if they contain recordings.
- You can use media mail to send educational charts and loose-leaf materials in binders as long as these items are for use by the educational or medical profession.
