Meditation practices deal with concentrating mind on a single focus, it may be the breath, body chakra or any physical object. The purpose of meditation is to remain anchored firmly in the present moment by focussing the attention on the object of meditation.
In case of third eye meditation the focus of attention is on the "third eye", the lens of which is believed to be situated in the aura of the sixth body chakra also known as the "Agya Chakra". According to ancient vedic scriptures there are seven chakras or points of consciousness situated at different points in the spinal cord. "Agya Chakra" or sixth chakra is located at a spot on forehead between the two eyebrows. By using sixth chakra as a focal point of meditation we can facilitate the development of our intuitive third eye.
The third eye meditation is a wonderful way to develop your powers of intuition and creativity.
One of the most effective ways of doing third eye meditation is "Trataka" kriya.
Sit comfortably, crossing your legs in Sukhasana or Padmasana (lotus pose), on a yoga mat, chair or bed.
You must keep your spine straight for optimum results.
Breathe deeply for 5 times to calm down your mind.
Now focus your attention on the "'Agya Chakra". To locate the sixth chakra, keep your eyes closed and draw both of your eyes upwards at approximately 20-25 degree angle, just at the centre of forehead between the two eyebrows. You will feel a pleasant pulling sensation on your eyes.
Breathing deeply focus on this point. After some time you will feel a tickling or tingling sensation at the point where your "Agya Chakra" is situated.
Do not force your mind, just let go of all thoughts.
A sudden surge of thoughts may be witnessed at this stage. Just acknowledge them but do not associate yourself with these thoughts. You can do so by being a passive witness; do not evaluate or judge your thoughts, just observe the thoughts come and go unconditionally, accepting whatever comes up without being for or against it.
Do not, however, aggressively try to suppress the thoughts and gently bring back your attention, each time it deviates, towards the third eye.
Gradually the mind will become calmer and the thoughts will soon disappear. At this stage try to realize the real "observer" within you.
You will be able to easily percieve the witness inside you, something beyond your mind and body, and yet a part of your being.
Just be in this state for 10-15 minutes.
You may see a bright light emanating from the third eye along with a pleasant tingling sensation at the focal point of your meditation.
Slowly return to the state of normalcy, let your eyes loose and free. Be still for a few more minutes, breathe deeply. Slowly open your eyes. Your meditation session is complete.
This third eye meditation is a very powerful meditation technique.
To increase its effectivity it is important to practice it every day, and if possible at the same time and place. You may light some incense sticks and use some positive affirmation or chant along with third eye meditation.
Just by spending a few minutes daily on third eye meditation, you can renew your energy reserves, attain mental calmness, build positive attitude, gain self-confidence and intuitive powers.
Most importantly, its a great stress-buster and a potent tool to find solutions to all your problems.
