Question: Are there any books or movies about the Northern Soul phenomenon?
Answer:
Mike Ritson and Stuart Russell’s The In Crowd: The Story Of The Northern And Rare Soul Scene is usually considered the best of the soulie scene biographies, but there's also David Nowell's Too Darn Soulful: The Story of Northern Soul, and Reg Sticking's Searching For Soul. Collectors should check out Tim Brown and Martin Koppel's The Essential Northern Soul Price Guide.
As of now, there are no good Northern Soul videos on the market. Earlier documentaries are out of print, and most of what's sold as such consists mainly of classic Northern Soul songs with footage over it. However, two independent UK films -- Soulboy (2009) and Function At The Junction (2002) -- are "coming of age" dramas set in the mid-70s Northern Soul scene.
