How to Obtain a Coroner's Report in New York City

    • 1). Visit the website for New York City's Office of Vital Records.

    • 2). Decide whether to request an autopsy report online, in person or by mail. Only family members of the deceased may place an online request for an autopsy report. To obtain a report for someone who was not a family member, you must order by mail or in person.

    • 3). Fill out the application for the autopsy report through the VitalChek website. The Office of Vital Records' website links to the appropriate VitalChek page, or you can access the page directly.

    • 4). Pay the mailing and service charges, which total $23.30, through the VitalChek website by credit card, debit card or electronic check.

    • 5). Wait up to 10 business days to receive the autopsy report. Consult the online table that details the processing time for the Office of Vital Records to find out when your request is being processed.
