How to Introduce a Baby to Solid Foods

    • 1). Feed baby only single grain cereals at first ,such as rice cereal or oatmeal baby cereal, due to possible allergic reactions to certain foods; single foods are easier to pinpoint if an allergic reaction does actually occur. Write down all foods that your baby is allergic to in order to avoid that ingredient in mixed food groups. Allergic reactions may take many forms such as hives, swelling, itchy palms or soles of the feet, mouth swelling; all are serious symptoms and should be evaluated by a health care professional immediately.

    • 2). Mix only 1 tbsp. of one-grain cereal for the first few feedings, as your baby will probably consume only half a tablespoon of food until he gets used to eating.

    • 3). Warm the cereal before feeding to your baby.

    • 4). Use a rubber-dipped baby spoon to feed your baby, so as not to hurt his delicate mouth or teething gums. Spoon up a small amount of warm cereal onto the spoon.

    • 5). Place spoon to baby’s lips and spoon into his mouth, spooning up any food that happens to dribble out of the corners of baby’s mouth.

    • 6). Stop feeding baby his cereal when he starts spitting it out or if he turns his head away from the spoon.

    • 7). Introduce other single item foods to your baby one by one, such as pears, apples, plums or bananas once per week--making sure no allergy occurs. If an allergy does occur, write down the allergy and visit the Emergency Room immediately.
