- 1). Shut down the Gateway M-1617 and close the screen. Remove the battery and all cables, and turn the computer over so that the closed screen faces down.
- 2). Unscrew the Phillips-head screw from the center of the Gateway M-1617 underside, next to the large vented cover panel.
- 3). Check the left side of the empty battery compartment--next to the battery release tab--for a silver Phillips-head screw. If you find one, unscrew it and set it aside. If you do not, skip this step.
- 4). Turn the Gateway M-1617 over and open the screen.
- 5). Insert the flat-head screwdriver into the opening on the left side of the speaker grille and button panel above the keyboard. Pry up the panel gently so that you can access the keyboard screws underneath. Do not disconnect the cable under the panel.
- 6). Unscrew and set aside the two Phillips-head screws at the top of the Gateway M-1617 keyboard.
- 7). Lift the top edge of the keyboard and slide the keyboard forward to disconnect the securing tabs from under the palm rest. Pick up the keyboard, push the locking tabs on the keyboard cable connector with a fingernail and slide the keyboard cable out of the connector. Set the old Gateway M-1617 keyboard aside.
- 8). Insert the cable for the new Gateway M-1617 keyboard into the connector, and push the locking tabs closed. Place the keyboard into the cavity and replace the two Phillips-head screws.
- 9). Push the button and speaker grille panel back into its original position. Close the Gateway M-1617 screen and turn the computer over.
