Does the happy canine have temper tantrums when left alone? They might have a case of dog separation anxiety.
If a dog just chews on things, barks and digs more when their owner is gone it may be boredom that is causing the problem.
If they chew or dig on areas of escape such as doors or window or items that have the owners scent then it is likely to be separation anxiety.
Other signs are: the dog lays on or near anything with the owners scent, elimination occurs in inappropriate places, barking all day after whining, the dog is over anxious to greet the owner and shows little guilt of any destruction, even when the owner is home the dog cannot be in a different room, the dog sleeps with the owner, they follow the owner around all of the time and distress starts when they see the owner is preparing to leave.
Now that it has been established about signs of dog separation anxiety let's look at what can be done.
When getting ready to go be real nonchalant about it, without a big display of good byes.
If returning then a simple hello will be sufficient.
Pet and play with the dog on the owners terms and avoid their constant request for attention.
The owner can act like they are leaving with certain cues such as picking up the purse and keys but not actually leaving.
Exercising a dog helps a lot, as does taking to dog parks.
Exercise can be up to about 1 1/2 hours per day.
Hiding treats for when the owner is planning to be gone helps give a dog something to occupy the time alone.
Keep toys out and anything that they like to do that is safe.
It is best not to point out or call attention to potential areas of destruction before leaving.
It may just give the dog ideas on where to target.
Scolding about destruction doesn't work.
Try crating when away if the duration is going to be tolerable.
Some owners leave their dog in a designated room while gone.
Try a doggy day care or take turns with or pay a neighbor or friend for animal watching.
While these methods help reduce anxiety, always take some time away while leaving the dog alone.
While the owner is at home, place the dog in a confined area for a little while.
Ignore demands for attention when the pet is allowed time alone.
After a little while open up the area but don't say anything to them.
These are some of the methods that have worked well for dog separation anxiety.
Check with dog trainers as well for other great ideas.
