Everyone knows that dealing with PCOS causes stress.
However for some (actually, for a large number of PCOS'ers) it doesn't stop there.
The thought of having to deal with this condition, and all it brings, causes overwhelming feelings that often lead to depression, and panic or anxiety.
You may feel as though you and/or your body is worthless or broken; that all of this stress is your fault, etc.
These feelings are completely normal!! The general stress of infertility and PCOS, the never ending "advice" we get from friends and family, and of course the lack of education and support from the medical community is a lot to deal with.
The point is, you need to know it is normal to experience these feelings.
But there are ways to overcome them and/or control them so they don't get out of hand.
Depression and anxiety are just another symptom that accompanies PCOS and infertility.
It has been proven that hormones cause changes in our emotional status (i.
e.
PMS, pregnancy, etc.
) So it is only natural that we have ups & downs with our hormone imbalances.
As with everything else regarding PCOS, regulating our hormones will help.
But that takes time, so in the meantime try these tips to help deal with overwhelming feelings: Herbs There are plenty of herbs to help depression, anxiety and panic attacks.
Some will simply help you relax and deal with stress, or insomnia due to stress, whereas others will actually help control/fight depression.
Essential Oils I have dealt with depression and anxiety attacks for years.
I did some research and found some essential oils that were supposed to help.
Out of desperation, I tried one for my anxiety attacks and IT HELPED.
I opened the bottle, took some slow deep breaths and within minutes my attack was gone.
Every time I had an attack or felt one coming on, I would grab that bottle of oil and take some breaths.
Soon, I noticed that i had less & less attacks.
You can use these oils in lotions, shampoos, in your bath water, on a wash cloth, or by smelling them.
Never apply essential oils directly to your skin, they should always be diluted with a carrier oil, water, etc.
Exercise We have already established how important exercise is for us.
It helps our hearts and helps us control our weight, but it also helps control stress and fight depression.
Yoga is exceptionally great for fighting these wicked feelings.
Heck, even a simple walk would benefit us and our minds.
Get outside Sunlight has been proven to fight and in some relieve the feelings of depression.
Therapy and/or support groups You cannot do this alone, don't even think about it.
Find a local support group, there are tons out there! Some for fertility/infertility, grief, stress, etc.
Therapy can also be beneficial, especially if you have been diagnosed with depression or anxiety.
Don't think that you are weak if you need support or therapy.
It takes a strong person to admit they cannot do it alone..
..
and you don't have to ! Get the help you need to make (and keep) your mind strong.
Lucinda Basset's "Attacking Anxiety & Depression" program is highly recommended by PCOSInfo.
She'll be your personal coach and guide you through a series of warm, empowering audio and video sessions which you can use in the comfort of your own home or car.
I personally have used her tips & techniques and have conquered my almost constant anxiety attacks.
When attacks arise due to my fluctuating hormones, I simply revert back to the techniques she taught and can quickly overcome the anxious/panicy feelings.
The most important thing to remember is if you are feeling sad, overwhelmed..
..
like you can't handle it anymore then get help.
Do not stand by and continue feeling this way, and DO NOT ignore these feelings thinking they will go away.
Depression is a serious condition that needs immediate attention.
Asking for help does not make you weak, it does not make it your fault.
Remember, its not something you can control but you don't have to let it run your life.
