Do you know what to do when your air flight is cancelled? Don't panic! I have taken many trips during irregular operations, due to weather, mechanical issues, etc. I am always shocked during my travels, to see so many people who do not know, what you are about to learn. They waste so much time, just trying to figure out what to do next!

I am going to tell you, before you start your air travel, so you don't get caught standing in line with 100+ passengers. Why stand in the air travel customer service line, if it is not necessary?

If you are at the airport, when your friendly airline announces that your flight has been cancelled, just wait for a minute, to see if they announce that you have been rebooked on another flight or airline. If the air travel airline advises you to stand in line or go to customer service for help, then here is what you do.

Look at the flight departure screen at the airport. Do they have another flight leaving soon? Go right to that gate and get on their standby list. Or, if they advise you, they have already confirmed you that flight, then you are done!

Meanwhile, if you are not confirmed on this flight, call your airline's reservation office from your cell phone. Many times, they have already rebooked you on the next available flight. If so, ask them to update your electronic ticket, if they can, so you can go directly to the gate, for your new confirmed flight.

If you are not confirmed, ask them to confirm you on their next flight or another airline, if possible. If they do book you on another airline, ask if they will update your ticket for you. The beauty of having an electronic ticket, is that the airline can usually update your ticket over the phone, without making you go back and stand in line to change a paper ticket at an airport.

In some cases, they will not be able to update your ticket over the phone. Then, you will have to go the airline's customer service counter, so they can get your ticket ready for the other airline. It really depends on what the ticket agreements there are between air travel carriers.

Another option would be using a self-help machine that some airlines have available. Do you know, some airlines have customer service computer kiosks in their gate areas? You can use them, instead of standing in line or calling. Do you know, the kiosk can sometimes give you a new protection flight, your new boarding pass and a seat? Some airlines already have your new flight confirmed in their kiosk and in the air travel reservations computer system. So, try those options also, if you are near a customer service kiosk. That might be faster!

Sometimes the next available flight on any airline is the next day. If it is weather related, then the airlines will not pay for a hotel. You may have to camp out at the airport or pay for your own hotel. If it is the airlines fault, like a mechanical problem, then they may pay for your hotel, if you are enroute. Then at this point, you would need to see a customer service agent. So, sometimes you will need to stand in that customer service line.
