Tools to Install a Guitar Jack

    Phillips Screwdriver

    • Guitar jacks are secured to the guitar with two to four Phillips screws. Some guitar jacks also are protected with a plate cover on the backside of the guitar. The cover is secured to the guitar with Phillips screws as well.

    Soldering Iron and Solder

    • Soldering the wires to the guitar jack only takes a couple of minutes. The soldering process requires a soldering iron, solder, a soldering iron stand, and a tip cleaning sponge. The soldering stand holds the soldering gun while it cools down. This prevents accidents and burns. The tip cleaning sponge is used to keep the tip of the soldering gun clean so that you can make a good connection with the wire and input jack.

    Protective Gear

    • It is easy to damage the finish of the guitar when working with a screwdriver and soldering iron. Lay a small cloth on the guitar to prevent scratches and hot solder from dripping on the guitar. Blue painter's tape works also without damaging the finish of the guitar. Wearing eye protection and gloves is also a good idea when working with a soldering gun to prevent injuries from hot bits of solder.

    Drill and Drill Bits

    • If you are building or modifying a guitar it is necessary to drill a hole in the guitar body before the input jack can be installed. This requires an electric drill and different size drill bits ranging from 7/8 to 1/2 inch. A ruler and pencil are also helpful for measuring and marking the best location for the input jack on the guitar.
