- 1). Plug the DVD recorder's power cord into the wall or power strip. Do not turn the unit on yet.
- 2). Take the coaxial cable (if you have cable or satellite TV) coming from the wall socket and connect it to the TV's input. Run another coaxial cable from the TV's output to the VHF/UHF input slot on the back of your Panasonic DVD recorder or cable box, depending on where you want the signal to go.
- 3). Connect standard RCA cables from the video and audio outputs on your TV set to the audio/video inputs on the back of your DVD recorder. See pages 7 through 9 of your User's Manual for diagrams and instructions on alternate and custom connections. (Download the complete User's Manual in Resources section.)
- 4). Press "Power On," then select your language preference. Press "Enter" on your remote control to start Plug-In Auto Tuning (sets your TV/cable channels). The Panasonic DMR-ES20 machine will also automatically set your clock.
- 5). Insert a blank recordable DVD into your recorder. Allow a minute or two for the recorder to format the disc and prepare it for recording. (Follow the on-screen prompts.) When you see the digital counter display set to 00:00, the Panasonic unit is ready to record.
- 6). Select the TV or cable channel you plan to record through your DVD recorder's remote or choose another input source: VHS, DVR, TiVo, Camcorder or whatever you want to dub from. (These will usually run through the "Auxiliary" channels on your TV.)
- 7). Press "Rec Mode" on the remote to choose the desired recording speed. For best quality with no picture or sound loss, use the XP setting. However this will only allow you to put about one hour of video on the DVD. If you want to squeeze eight hours of video on a disc, use the EP or FR (automatic mode selection) setting. The quality will be poor but acceptable for reference material.
- 8). Press the "Record" button when you are ready to begin recording or dubbing. (Hint: do a practice run first to ensure everything is properly connected.) Hit "Pause" to temporarily halt recording whenever necessary.
- 9). Hit "Stop" when you are finished recording. At this point, you may continue to record additional chapters on the disc if time remains, or "Finalize" the disc if recording is complete.
