- 1). Install window blinds or shades to create a streamlined appearance on all the windows. Blinds or shades can be stand-alone window treatments that give the space a neat, simplistic feel. At different times of the day, you can control the amount of natural light that enters the space and also the amount of privacy the space has from the outside.
- 2). Measure the width and length of each window that will receive window blinds or shades. This is important since the correct installation of some blinds is fitted within the frame of the window. Windows that are wider and longer than standard-size will require custom-made blinds or shades.
- 3). Purchase the blinds or shades and install their hardware. Mark the locations of the hardware, and predrill pilot holes into the window frame to make it easy to align the hardware. Screw the hardware into place, and slide and secure the window blind or shade into its supports.
- 1). Soften the hard lines of the windows in a new home with fabric curtains.
- 2). Measure the width and length of the windows. From these measurements, purchase curtain panels for the windows. There are hosts of curtain styles to choose from. Study the design style of your home and what will become its decor in terms of furniture and accessories to determine the best style of curtains for the space. Simple curtain panels work well when the room is richly decorated with various colors and textures, while more ornate and decorative curtains and drapes work well in rooms with minimal yet exquisite decor.
- 3). Purchase the curtain panels for your windows. Coordinate the window treatments in your new home with the wall color and the color of the furniture pieces. Select the same curtain panels for each room for uniformity, especially in an open floor plan, where one space seamlessly leads into the next.
- 4). Install the curtain hardware by marking the screw positions for the rod with a pencil onto the window frame, predrilling the holes and screwing the hardware in place with a drill and screws.
- 5). Hang the curtains on the rods. Each single window receives two curtain panels, while double windows receive four panels. Keep the curtains open to not only allow natural light into the room during the daytime, but to decorate the sides of each new window with the soft texture of fabrics.
