- 1). Follow the recommendations. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends drinking 4 to 8 ounces of fluid for every 15 to 20 minutes of vigorous physical activity, like soccer.
- 2). Drink before and after playing. Active players should drink 16 to 20 ounces just before playing and again immediately after.
- 3). Make sure that young players are drinking enough. Children under 10 should drink until they're no longer thirsty. Then give them half a cup more. A full cup more is recommended for older children. If they refuse, insist they drink more. Research shows that even when water is offered, active children do not drink enough.
- 4). Have your child drink plenty of water the night before playing.
- 5). Serve warm fluids in cool weather if the player is chilled. Drinking icy-cold fluids in warmer weather will keep body temperatures down.
