Designing, decorating or remodeling the area above the fireplace does not have to be costly or difficult. There are many ideas for do-it-yourself projects for a free weekend. A simple remake, such as painting, adding wallpaper or fabric can change the look dramatically. More involved projects could entail adding mirror, ceramic or glass tiles or even hammered metal panels or veneer panels of faux stone or rock.

    Mirror Tiles

    • Mirror tiles come in various styles and sizes. They can be from 1-by-1-inch to 12-by-12-inch squares, clear or tinted and veined or beveled. To start, measure the space above the mantel where the tiles will be installed and make sure the wall is clean and dry. Use a glass cutter if full squares do no fit the desired space or border large tiles with smaller ones. Follow manufacturers directions for mirror tile adhesive to secure tiles to the wall. When adhesive is dry, wipe mirror tiles with glass cleaner.

    Veneers

    • Veneers are lightweight high-density polyurethane mixed with rock, stone, brick, coral stone or travertine. This product will not absorb moisture so it will not mold. It can be installed over most pre-existing surfaces and is very affordable and easy to install. The panels are designed to be interlocking, much like tongue and groove, which creates a seamless look. They are flexible so they can be installed on bumpy or curved walls. Before installing, make sure the wall is clean and dry. All that is needed for installation is a measuring tape, hand saw, nails or screws, hammer or screwdriver, level, framing square and construction adhesive.

    Paint

    • Paint the existing wood paneling a contrasting color to make the fireplace a focal point of the room. First, make sure the paneling is clean and dry then seal it with polyurethane so it won't absorb and use excess paint. Use a roller to apply paint. After painting, the space can be used for bookshelves, paintings or family photos, or hang a flat screen TV in the space.
