- 1). Mark the border design with paint. Try to stay 12 to 24 inches from flowers or vegetation in the garden bed. This will allow blooming plants and flowers plenty of room to expand as they grow.
- 2). Using an edger or hoe, cut out the existing earth, 1 to 2 inches deep and as wide as one brick, along the marked line. Try to keep the trench as close to the same depth as possible the entire length of the border so the bricks will set flush and even. Replace earth snugly against the brick border to eliminate any ruts or holes along the edge.
- 3). Place a single level of bricks, as evenly and closely as possible to one another, the length of the garden or flower bed. Step back and look to ensure the placement is the way you want it.
- 4). After the first level of bricks are set, place the second tier on top of them with the center of the brick to the edge of the brick below, for a staggered look.
- 5). Continue staggering tiers of bricks until reaching the desired border height.
