Ways ESL Students Can Significantly Increase English Speaking Success

Being a non-native English speaker, you feel that verbal communication can be an intimidating act. You fear committing grammar, vocabulary or pronunciation mistakes in the spoken language. What makes these mistakes embarrassing is that they can be very noticeable, especially to those who are fluent. Good news, despite this fear, you can still become successful in talking! Below are the things that you must do:

1. Convince Yourself that You are Knowledgeable

You start to believe that you are not an expert in the language. You suspect that you cannot narrate your story or point strongly. You imagine that people will not listen to your words. You think of just keeping your views to yourself.

Stop those thoughts - right away! These negative thoughts will bulldoze your self-confidence. They are sure to ruin your poise. What should you do?

Convince yourself that you are knowledgeable about your speech. Are you sure you have reviewed your topic thoroughly? Are you sure you have arranged your thoughts logically? Are you sure you have rehearsed well? If your answers to these questions are a resounding yes, then you are all set.

Of course, there will be somebody else who is more experienced about your speech. However, that person cannot lessen your right to speak out.

Speak out and speak with confidence. You have done your preparations. Now is the time to perform.

2. Channel Your Focus on Others

Before talking, channel your attention to your audience. The purpose of directing your focus on others is to keep your mind from yourself. You have to do this in order to lessen your self-consciousness.

What harm can being overly self-conscious do to you? Being overly self-conscious can work up your fright of speaking. This can happen because you concentrate way too much on yourself, looks, and words.

3. Believe in Your Words

There is one great way to make others believe in you: Believe in yourself first. If you act unsure, people will think you are unsure. If you act credibly, people will think you are credible. You are what you project.

So how can you believe in yourself?

Believe in your words. Know how your words will make you and your listeners better individuals. If you do not know the value of your words, then your audience will not listen to you. Remember, people listen to those who say relevant, sensible or amusing words.

In gist, non-native speakers like you must aim for success whenever speaking in English. By aiming high, you become motivated to realize your aim. Learn more how to become confident in conveying your opinions, delivering a presentation, or simply chatting in this foreign language.
