Medicaid is a government-sponsored program that provides health care coverage to low income families. Each state, including Ohio, has it's own program with unique eligibility requirements and coverage benefits. - To be eligible for Medicaid in Ohio, an individual or family applying for coverage must possess certain basic requirements: They must live in Ohio, be U.S. citizens and qualify as a low income household. If an individual is applying, the individual must be under 19, over 65, pregnant, or have a disability. For families to qualify, the family must have children under the age of 19. Additionally, certain women screened for cervical and breast cancers may also be eligible.
- Individuals covered by Medicaid can receive medical services and treatments at ambulatory surgery centers, in out-patient centers and in nursing facilities. The medical services and costs covered include nurse practitioner services, physician services, pediatric nurse services, family planning services and supplies, home health services, impatient services, lab work and x-rays, medical supplies, dental supplies and vision supplies.
- Individuals and families insured through Medicaid are still responsible to bare some costs for their medical treatments unless they are pregnant, under the age of 21, living in a nursing home, under hospice care, or under some other plan that does not require co-payments. Individuals not exempt must pay $2 to $3 for medications and examinations.
