How to Make a Walkie Talkie With Tin Cans & a String

    • 1). Open one end of each tin can using a can opener and empty the contents. Remove the labels from the cans and rinse out the inside of each can using water. Dry each can using a towel.

    • 2). Turn each can upside down so that the open side is on the bottom. Place the tip of the nail in the exact center of the base of the can that is facing up. Steady the nail with one hand while pounding it through the base of the can using the hammer. Once the nail has gone completely through, pull the nail back out. Repeat this process with the second can.

    • 3). Decide how long you want your kite string to be and thus how far away you want to be from the other person to whom you’ll be talking. For the best results, cut your length of kite or nylon string so that it is at least 50 feet long, if not longer.

    • 4). Place one end of the string up through the bottom nail hole of one of the cans. Pull the string through the can and wrap the string around a toothpick several times. Tie the string around the toothpick in a knot or secure the string around the toothpick using clear tape. Pull the string back through the bottom nail hole until the toothpick is taut against the nail hole inside the can. Repeat this process with the second can.

    • 5). Take one of the cans and go as far away as the walkie talkie will let you. Have the other person hold his can up to his ear while you speak into your can and vice versa.
