- 1). Paint the wall opposite the Murphy bed and the two adjoining walls the same color, and paint the Murphy bed's wall a different, contrasting color. That paint scheme makes the bed's wall the focal wall. For the bed's wall, use a paint color that's vibrant but still fits in an office setting, such as cobalt blue or hunter green. Select a contrasting color for the remaining walls.
- 2). Hide the built-in Murphy bed by hanging floor-length curtains in front of the bed, making the room appear to have a window in that location. Use a curtain rod that stands out from the wall to provide clearance for the bed. Install curtain tie-backs so you can pull the curtains aside when you need to use the bed.
- 3). Hang one or more pieces of artwork on the Murphy bed wall, but keep the design simple. Choose pieces such as long Asian scrolls or art in long picture frames, and hang them on each side of the bed.
- 4). Flank each side of the Murphy bed with a side table and lamp. The arrangement will bring more light into the space and frame the false window. Scoot the side tables away from the curtains a few inches to allow the curtains to move freely.
- 5). Place an attractive corner desk in the corner opposite the Murphy bed. Ensure that the end of the desk clears the bed.
- 6). Place office furniture on wheels on the other end of the corner desk's wall. You may roll each piece of office furniture out of the way, and you may move them in front of the Murphy bed as needed or to prevent the room's furniture from looking lopsided.
- 7). Measure how far the Murphy bed extends when it's pulled down from the wall. Ensure you have at least 18 to 24 inches of walkway space between the extended bed and furniture. Furniture pieces such as a bookshelf or dresser work well at the end of a Murphy bed.
