Airport lockers have been a common sight at the USA airports for years and they still are.
These lockers come in very handy for travellers on long transfer times making it possible to do some shopping or even possibly to a visit of the nearby city.
However there is one problem: most of the left luggage airport lockers in the USA are put out of operation.
Most of the airports used to offer a electronic locker facility.
A customer used a touch screen to chose a locker number, pay the rental fee, travelers could easily store their luggage and would then receive a ticket to open the airport locker.
Lockers could easily be reopened with a unlock code provided on the ticket given by the locker station.
After 9/11 however the FAA decided to banish this system from all airports.
The main reason why the FAA decided to close down the left luggage locker facilities is they were worried that an airport employee could rent a locker, put a weapon in it and then pass on the activation code to a traveller.
New electronic locker system technology has been tested for some years now making it possible that only the person that rented a locker can re-open it.
They started testing the use of fingerprint technology which may be the solution.
However as of today many airports still do not offer any left luggage lockers.
Maybe within the next 5 years technology will make airports more convenient again by reinstating the airport lockers.
