How to Get an H1 Visa

    • 1). Obtain a Bachelor's degree or higher in your area of specialization. The degree must be a pre-requisite for the job to which you are applying.

    • 2). Obtain employment from one of the professions that allows employees to receive the H1B visa. These professions include doctors, architects, university professors, computer specialists, nurses, surgeons, health care workers, engineers, lawyers and financial analysts.

    • 3). Obtain a digital photograph of yourself. This photograph is supplied online during the application process. The picture must be in color, in the JPEG format, and must be no less than 600 by 600 pixels and no more than 1200 by 1200 pixels.

    • 4). Instruct your employer to fill out the visa application on your behalf. The application requires you and your employer to provide a variety of documents and information.

    • 5). Pay the processing fee. The employer generally handles the payment. As of December 2010, if the employer has fewer than 25 employees, the fee is $2,000. If the company has greater than 25 employees, the fee is $2,750. The employer may add an additional $1,225 to the standard fee for expedited processing.

    • 6). Wait for approval from the government. Your employer is notified when your H1B application is approved.
