- Shot Jackson was a steel guitar player who recorded with country music stars, such as Kitty Wells and Roy Acuff. Buddy Emmons was a Nashville-based steel guitar player. They collaborated on the first "Sho-Bud" (short for Shot and Buddy) in 1957.
- The Sho-Bud was the first commercial steel guitar that had foot pedals which allowed the player to bend the strings of the guitar. This allowed the player to achieve complex tonal effects that were difficult or impossible on a lap-steel guitar.
- From 1957 to 1984, 12 different Sho-Bud pedal steel models hit the market: from the Permanent (1957-1964) to the SuperPro II (1979 - 1984).
- Shot Jackson's family sold the Sho-Bud company to the guitar manufacturer Gretsch in 1979. Gretsch continued to make a pedal steel, the SuperPro II, for five years, but dropped the trade name in 1984.
