- 1). Teach machine safety. Demonstrate to employees the proper way to operate machinery located in the warehouse. Have them practice using it while you are supervising, and correct any unsafe practices they exhibit. Provide training for forklift operators in how to correctly and safely load, unload and maneuver their machines through the warehouse.
- 2). Discuss lifting techniques. Instruct employees in the correct way to lift heavy objects using their knees instead of their backs. Set a weight at which employees can't lift an item on their own and must get another worker to help them team lift it.
- 3). Provide protective equipment. Determine what protective equipment workers in the warehouse need to protect themselves from danger. This often includes safety glasses for their eyes and earplugs to protect their ears from loud machine noises. Require employees to purchase it, or provide it for all employees on the company dime.
- 4). Cover falls. Require employees to wear steel-toed boots or shoes with a grip surface as these cut down on the chance of a fall in the warehouse. Mandate that employees clean up any spills or liquid on the floor immediately and place caution signs around the area to alert employees of the wet floor.
- 5). Inform employees about emergency plans. Provide a training class for first aid and CPR that teaches employees how to provide immediate care in an emergency situation. Instruct them on how to report any falls, injuries, cuts or other accidents that occur. Teach employees how to properly clean up blood and other bodily fluids in a safe manner.
