Should I Be Growing Salvia at Home?

Salvia is a perennial herb with large green leaves, white flowers, and hollow square stems which belongs to the mint family and is usually found in Mexico. Salvia is also known as Salvia Divinorum.

Now when you hear Cannabis, most people snap to urgent attention. They sit up immediately with suspicious frowns on their faces and hold their teenage kids that much closer. But some people are blissfully ignorant about the effects of Salvia which includes disorientation, slurred speech, confusion, hallucinations, etc. In some nations, Salvia is viewed with the same level of distrust reserved for hard drugs even though there are no known cases of over-dose from its use.

Well the good news is, apart from its obviously €recreational' effects, the Salvia Divinorum is being used by the Mazatecs and some other groups like that for religious purposes. Also, it is usually used for medicinal purposes like curing diarrhoea, some forms of rheumatism, headache, schizophrenia, depression, Alzheimer's, etc. Intake of Salvia can also be therapeutic as it is said to result in feelings of tranquillity and better moods.

Now if you are wondering whether you should grow Salvia at home, you may want to first consider whether it is legal to grow and/or distribute it in your country. Although it can be chewed raw, some prefer to smoke it. In some States, Salvia is roughly viewed on the same level as addictive drugs and the sale and usage is restricted but these days, people seem to be able to get it at will online.

There are some benefits to growing Salvia in your own garden. For starters, if you use Salvia, then you probably know by now that growing your own crop will definitely make it cheaper for you, not to mention the fact that you could stand to make a nice, tidy profit from sale of the herb.

A second consideration, right on the heels of the legality or otherwise of growing the plant, should be whether you live in the appropriate climate for it. As much as we wish it were otherwise, not all plants flourish in every climate so here's a thought: if you live in a freezing climate do not, grow Salvia Divinorum in your home garden as it grows best in a humid semi-tropical planet. However, in such climates you may decide to grow it indoors.
Growing Salvia in one's gardens serves an ornamental purpose as it beautifies the gardens. The leafy, exotic colour creates a bright splash!

Now you may think that that's all, but teenagers have been known to abuse the product so if you are thinking of growing it in your garden, you may want to consider the possibility of those innocent youngsters being exposed to an excess of it. I mean, what's to stop them taking a stroll in the garden and chewing a mouthful every two minutes?

Research is also very important because the plant does not grow as commonly as others. It requires a certain level of care and time and if you do not know how to go about it, you will certainly not be pleased with the results.
